Ireland: 14 years in prison for abortion
Ireland, action created 23.6.2015, petition is active
She’s pregnant. Doctors say the fetus won’t survive. But Irish law says she no choice but to endure the pregnancy.
She was raped. Now she’s pregnant. And each day that the pregnancy continues reminds her of the horror she went through.
She needs an abortion, but she is not allowed one in Ireland. Instead, she is forced to leave the country – if she can travel. If she stays and tries to have an abortion in Ireland, she is threatened with a 14-year imprisonment sentence.
She is not a criminal. She has a human right to an abortion.
In Ireland, abortion is a crime, even in cases of rape, incest or fetal harm. Help us make a difference. Sign the petition and urge Ireland to change its abortion law today!
Ireland has the world's most restrictive abortion law. Ireland's constitution protects prenatal life in the same way as the mother's life, and the only situation where abortion is permitted is when the mother's life is in danger. No other legal grounds for abortion exist, whether it's incest, rape or damaged fetus - in all these cases, abortion is a crime. Women could be sentenced to 14 years in prison as a result of abortions.
Health centers often do not provide complete information on abortions because they are afraid they might be accused of publicity and promotion of abortion, for which they would face a fine of up to € 4,000.
Around 4,000 women and girls are leaving Ireland every year to gain access to abortion somewhere abroad. They feel ashamed because they have to leave their country to seek abortions elsewhere.
