Trest smrti publikován 26.5.2014

The case of Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, who was sentenced to death for her religion, arouse concerns in many countries. Over 620,000 people all over the world signed the petition of Amnesty International for her release, almost 11,600 people out of that in the Czech Republic - these are great results and we thank you so much for your support. Apart from launching our petition, we have approached the Sudanese Embassy as well as the minister of foreign affairs, Lubomír Zaorálek. Mr. Zaorálek consequently called upon his Sudanese counterpart, Ali Ahmed Karti, to free the young Sudanese from all charges. By coincidence, Karti was visiting the Czech Republic last week and he promised that the Sudanese government will try to ensure that the verdict will not be carried out. "In the Sudanese legal system, there is an obsolete law which provides this. I claim that it is unconstitutional. I will be glad if this specific case leads to debates about this law and its removal from our legal system," the Sudanese minister of foreign affairs said in Prague. Amnesty had the chance to speak with Meriam's lawyers. They appealed against the sentence immediately and the case will therefore most likely be heard in the Sudanese Supreme court. The lawyers stated that the pregnant woman has had her legs bound with a heavy chain for the whole time spent in prison, which is a common practice for prisoners sentenced to death in Sudan. Also, her other charge of "adultery" remains in force, as a result of which a sentence of flogging was imposed on Meriam. Amnesty keeps demanding her immediate release and a chage of inhumane laws in Sudan. Keep updated about the current developments in this case on this website or Facebook.
