Protestující se sešli, aby požadovali propuštění Dordže Dagcchäla který byl zadržen 29. září poté, co veřejně vystoupil na protest proti nařízení místních úředníků. To stanovilo, že obyvatelé vesnice a mniši z kláštera v Diriu musí kvůli oslavám čínského státního svátku vyvěsit na své domy a klášter čínské vlajky. Čínská policie proti neozbrojeným demonstrantům zasáhla nepřiměřenou silou, použila zbraně a slzný plyn. Přibližně 60 Tibeťanů bylo při zásahu zraněno.
Podle organizace International Campaign for Tibet ve stejný den úřady zadržely v souvislosti s protesty dalších 40 Tibeťanů. Někteří zůstávají stále ve vazbě a osud několika z nich není znám vůbec.
Události z 6. října jsou už druhým případem za poslední čtvrtrok, kdy ozbrojené složky použily nepřiměřenou sílu k potlačení pokojných protestů v Tibetu.
Ve městě Tcha-wu v provincii S‘-čchuan čínská policie 6. července vážně zranila nejméně 10 Tibeťanů, kteří se sešli, aby společně oslavili dalajlamovy narozeniny.

Your Excellency,
Allow me to turn to you on behalf of Amnesty International Czech Republic to express my deep concern over the case of 60 Tibetans injured after a peaceful protest in Driru in the Tibet Autonomous Region on 6 October 2013. According to information received by Amnesty International some of those seriously injured were denied medical care for several days. As a result, one individual remains in a very critical condition. On the same day, 40 other protesters were detained. Some of them and remain in detention to this day and the whereabouts of others remains unknown.
The protesters had gathered to demand the release of a local Tibetan who was detained on 29 September after speaking out against authorities’ efforts to force local families and monasteries to fly the Chinese flag on the occasion of a Chinese national holiday.
Amnesty International believes that the Tibetans were deliberately attacked by the authorities solely for having peacefully exercised their right of assembly and association. It is evident that the Chinese authorities have done nothing to rein in excessive use of force by their security forces or to increase respect for Tibetans’ right to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
In the light of the above described, I respectfully urge you, Your Excellency, to ensure that:
• violence against Tibetans in Diriu is stopped immediately
• injured Tibetans are granted access to medical care
• cases of detained Tibetans are properly investigated.
