End of High-Profile Actions

  Článek

Many thanks to all those that have taken action for Yorm Bopha over the last few months. She continues to have the possibility of a new trial hearing hanging over her, but it is unclear if or when this would actually take place. The situation for her is highly unpredictable, particularly at a time when the political landscape in Cambodia is changing, with continuing protests and a violent response by the government. In this context, it is difficult to foresee whether continued high-profile attention on her case will have a positive impact, and following her release on bail, this could in fact prove counterproductive. We therefore ask that all large-scale public activities cease for the time being, although we encourage you to continue sending appeals to the addresses listed. We will continue to monitor the situation, continue to provide updates as they are needed.

Cambodian unjustly sentenced to three years in prison!

Yorm Bopha was sentenced in December 2012 to three years in prison after being accused of planning an assault on two men suspected of theft. Bopha is a activist living at Boeung Kak lake in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, where she defends the people's right to housing and freedom of expression. Amnesty International sees Bopha as a prisoner of conscience, detained by the authorities in connection with her peaceful activist activities.
